Capybara Crossing is the endless road-crossing game this blog covers. You tap to hop forward and swipe to move, crossing roads, riding logs and lily pads over rivers, and slipping across railways between trains. Stand still too long and an eagle swoops in. The whole game runs on the device, so it works on a plane, on the subway or in a car with no signal.
Only the ads need a connection. Offline, that also means the optional reward videos (50 bonus coins or a revive) won’t load, but every run, coin, capybara and achievement works. There’s no account, and your progress is saved on the phone. It’s free with no in-app purchases, rated 9+, and a 39.9 MB download on the App Store, so it fits on a nearly full phone. Coins from runs buy 19 capybaras, from the 100-coin Baby Capy to the 3,500-coin Space Capy.
Crossy Road #
The game that made endless road-crossing famous in 2014 lists “offline playable” on the App Store. Runs work without a signal; leaderboards, ads and free gifts that check a server don’t. It has hundreds of characters, many of them animals, and some change the whole world: the Astronaut turns the map into space, with asteroids to dodge. It’s free, with ads and paid characters from $0.99 to $2.99, and at 256.4 MB you’ll want to download it before you leave home.

Otter’s Odyssey #
Its App Store subtitle is literally “Otter offline game”. The listing doesn’t say much else, so check the screenshots to see whether its style suits you. It’s a good candidate if you specifically want an otter game for a trip.
Rakko Ukabe #
A relaxing sea otter collector: you place food and goods in the sea and wait for otters to visit, with more than 120 otter types and 240+ items. It’s rated 4+ and has ads. One App Store reviewer says they turn Wi-Fi off to get through the ads faster, which suggests the game itself runs offline. Our otter games list has more.
Test these before you travel #
Alto’s Adventure and Alto’s Odyssey #
These are snowboarding and sandboarding games rather than animal games, but llamas are the running joke, and chasing them is part of Alto’s Adventure. They’re premium single-player games with no account, and popular travel picks. Still, test them in airplane mode after any update.
Edward Hopper | froggerlike #
A 16-bit Frogger-style crosser with a frog, turtles and logs. It has no in-game ads, but its global leaderboards need a connection, and its last update was in 2019, so check that it launches offline on your phone.
Banana Kong #
A jungle endless runner from 2013 with more than 100 million downloads. You play a gorilla racing away from a wave of banana peels, tapping to jump and swiping to dash, while toucans, boars, turtles, snakes and giraffes help you along. Bananas buy upgrades between runs. Its listing doesn’t mention offline play.
Capybara Rush #
A capybara game with five modes (running, driving, swimming, stacking and flying) in which you collect oranges, ice cream, bananas and secret letters to earn more than 60 capybaras. It’s rated 9+, sells a $2.99 No Ads upgrade and currency bundles, and it’s a large 452.3 MB download. Its listing doesn’t mention offline play.
Cats & Soup #
An idle game where cats cook soup in a forest and keep collecting ingredients while you’re away. It’s rated 4+ and ads are optional. Idle games often need a connection to sync what happened while you were gone, so try it in airplane mode first.
Prefer a runner to a hopper? #
If you came looking for a cute take on Subway Surfers or Temple Run, Banana Kong and Capybara Rush are the closest animal runners here: the game pushes you forward and you swipe to dodge. Crossy Road and Capybara Crossing are hoppers. Nothing moves until you tap, which many players who find runners stressful like better, although both games send an eagle if you wait too long.
How do you check if a game works offline? #
- Update everything at home. Many games download data after an update and fail offline until they have it.
- Open each game once online and play a round, so any tutorial, first-launch download or sign-in prompt is out of the way.
- Turn on airplane mode, and check that Wi-Fi is off too. Airplane mode can leave Wi-Fi on.
- Force-close the game, reopen it and play a full round. A title screen isn’t proof. Some games only complain when you start a run or go back to the menu.
- Spend some coins, then close and reopen the game to confirm your progress saved without a connection.
